January
- January 23 – An early morning fire caused by a wall mounted natural gas heater kills 48-year-old Laura J. Snyder-Gardner and her 16-year-old daughter Mary Ann at their home at 3103 Manor Road in Falls Church.[1]
February
- February 7 – 64-year-old Richard Anderson is struck by a train and killed in Springfield.[2]
- February 11 – 15 year-old Bobby Collar attempts suicide at his home in Centreville. After lingering for three days, Collar dies on February 14 when he is carved up for parts for organ donation.
- February 18 – 38-year-old Jennifer L. Pearson is stabbed to death by her husband Timothy Conner in the couple's apartment at 12002 Waterside View Drive, #22 in Reston. Conner then sets a fire in the apartment and flees to Texas, where he commits suicide.[3][4]
- February 28 – While fleeing from the Fairfax County Police following a domestic dispute at his house in Fairfax, 40-year-old Cicero I. Limberea unintentionally kills himself when he runs the white SUV he is driving head-on into a police cruiser while driving the wrong way on Little River Turnpike in Annandale and the SUV bursts into flames.[5][6][7]
March
- March 4 – The Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation announces the appointment of Edythe Frankel Kelleher as executive director, replacing the departed David Versel.[8]
- March 9 – Captain Carol Wilhite takes command of the Mason District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department and Captain Mike Wall takes command of the Reston District Station.[9][10]
April
- April 1 – John W. Dargle, Jr. abruptly resigns as Director of the Fairfax County Park Authority. FCPA Deputy Director and Chief Financial Officer Cindy Messinger takes over as acting director.[11][12]
- April 12 – 46-year-old Tasheik A. Champean is sentenced to 30 years in Federal prison for his role in a botched home invasion robbery at 14421 Compton Road in Centreville that resulted in the fatal shooting of 39-year-old handyman Jose Cardona on May 17, 2010.[13]
- April 18 – The Fairfax County School Board unanimously approves Karen Garza as the new superintendent of the Fairfax County Public Schools system.[14]
May
- May 8 – Renovations begin on the Oak Marr RECenter in Oakton.
June
- June 1 – 24-year-old Manuel Alejandro Jimenez Benitez drunkenly kills 29-year-old Norbert Sebok and 24-year-old Jozsef Szathmari in a head-on crash on the Fairfax County Parkway near Sugarland Valley Drive in Herndon.[15]
- June 17 – 36-year-old Anand Venkata fatally shoots his mother-in-law, 62-year-old Lakshmi Bhat, then turns the gun on himself and commits suicide in his 23rd floor apartment in the Skyline Towers at 5597 Seminary Road in Falls Church.[16][17]
- June 25 – 24-year-old Haseeb Raza is stabbed and mortally injured his 20-year-old brother Mohammad, who then shoots and mortally injures himself in the home at 4169 Travers Court in the Rockland Village neighborhood of Chantilly. Both men, as well as a 61-year-old family member who had been stabbed when he tried to intervene, were taken to local hospitals, where Haseeb dies that day and Mohammad dies two days later.[18]
- June 27 – Dr. Karen K. Garza is sworn in as the superintendent of the Fairfax County Public Schools system.[19]
- June 27 – The Board of Directors of the Reston Association votes to ban the use of electronic cigarettes on all property owned by the association.[20]
July
- July 16 – The State Council for Higher Education in Virginia revokes the University of Northern Virginia's license to operate and orders it to close.[21]
- July 19 – Stacy L. Reed, the instigator and getaway driver for the botched home invasion robbery in Centreville on May 17, 2010 that resulted in the fatal shooting of handyman Jose Cardona, is sentenced to 22½ years in Federal prison.[22]
- July 30 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors permanently appoints Edwin C. Roessler, Jr. as Chief of the Fairfax County Police Department.[23]
August
- August 7 – On his way home from an appearance in the Fairfax County General District Court on domestic violence charges, 25-year-old Caleb Crew strangles his 31-year-old wife Andrea in a credit union parking lot. He then stashes her corpse in a Springfield park, returning later to retrieve and weight it down before finally dumping it in the Occoquan River.[24][25]
- August 16 – Dr. Robyn Hooker retires as principal of Kent Gardens Elementary School.[26]
- August 20 – 36-year-old Juan Francisco Cerna Alfaro, a worker for the Tysons Service Corporation, is killed when he falls into a 15-foot-deep hole, which then collapses, at 1050 Kinglet Court in McLean.[27][28]
- August 23 – The corpse of 16-year-old McLean High School student Emylee A. Lonczak is found on the ground outside the house at 8228 Madrillon Estates Drive in Vienna following a tip. On August 21, Lonczak had gone on a shopping excursion with Kyle Alifom and two other men to purchase heroin in Washington, D.C., and lost consciousness after being injected with a combination of heroin and antihistamines. Knowing exactly how much trouble they would be in for giving narcotics to a minor, the group decided that rather than obtain prompt medical attention for Lonczak, they should take her to Alifom's house. They placed her on a bed in the basement, where she died while Alifom slept off his buzz. Discovering her dead the next morning, Alifom dragged her body outside and covered it with a screen in some bushes next to his house.[29][30][31][32]
- August 29 – Following a 50-minute standoff at his home at 7907 Pebble Brook Court in Springfield, Fairfax County Police Officer Adam D. Torres shoots and mortally wounds unarmed 46-year-old kitchen installer John B. Geer. Geer retreats back into his townhouse, where he bleeds to death. Geer's corpse is found on the floor when the SWAT team uses a hostage rescue vehicle to knock down the front door and a team enters the home.[33][34]
September
- September 1 – After over 20 years in operation, the Treasured Child consignment shop located in the Burke Village Center in Burke closes.[35]
- September 15 – 16-year-old Gerard Gomez is shot to death by 23-year-old Jose Alberto Blanco-Calzadilla in the parking lot of the Residence Inn at 8616 Westwood Center Drive in Vienna.[36][37]
- September 25 – Abir Ali is convicted of second-degree murder in the beating death of his friend and employer Bharat P. Patel in Reston on June 9, 2012.[38]
October
- October 7 – Nelson Omar Quintanilla Trujillo is murdered in Fairfax County by MS-13 members Jose Lopez Torres, Juan Carlos Marquez Ayala, and Omar DeJesus Castillo.[39][40]
- October 14 – 38-year-old Pablo Aquino is killed when he falls 40 feet from the roof of the building at 950 Herndon Parkway in Herndon.[41][42][43]
- October 18 – 17-year-old Juan Carlos Godoy is shot and mortally wounded by 26-year-old Javier DeJesus Martinez at 2274 Marginella Drive in Reston. Godoy is flown to the hospital, where he dies on October 20.[44][45]
- October 30 – 28-year-old James Bryant is shot and killed by Fairfax County Police Officer Mohammed Oluwa outside the Eleanor U. Kennedy Adult Emergency Shelter at 9155 Richmond Highway in Fort Belvoir.[46][47]
November
- November 7 – 68-year-old Kirkland Stewart dies in a fire at his townhouse at 6902 Deer Run Drive in Alexandria.[48]
- November 15 – 28-year-old Julio Blanco Garcia is sentenced to 49 years in prison by Judge Jane Marum Roush for the murder of Vanessa Pham on June 27, 2010.[49]
- November 19 – Kirk W. Kincannon is appointed as Director of the Fairfax County Park Authority by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.[50]
- November 20 – 46-year-old ATF agent Paul V. Parisi fatally shoots his wife, 47-year-old Jannine D. Parisi, then commits suicide at the family home at 13497 Point Pleasant Drive in Chantilly.[51][52]
- November 22 – 69-year-old Alex Kovacs is mortally injured when his 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt is struck by a 2003 BMW as Kovacs attempts to turn into 9114 Richmond Highway and Kovacs is ejected from his Cobalt.[53] Kovacs is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies on December 6.[54]
- November 26 – Stacey A. Kincaid is sworn in as the first female sheriff of Fairfax County by Judge Dennis J. Smith.[55]
- November 29 – Family members arriving for the viewing of Colonel Joseph M. Chapman at the Everly Funeral Home in the City of Fairfax are unpleasantly surprised to discover themselves in a plot from an unimaginative black comedy when they find another corpse dressed in Chapman's army uniform on display. The family confronts the funeral home staff, who hide in an office before finally checking the toe tag on the corpse and admitting that Col. Chapman may have been cremated or buried elsewhere.[56][57]
December
- December 4 – While racing on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway, 30-year-old Brian B. Blaine is mortally injured when he loses control of his 2001 Honda S200 convertible and crashes near the intersection of Spring Village Drive.[58]
- December 17 – Assistant superintendent Deborah L. Tyler announces that Fort Hunt Elementary School principal Barbara Liebbrandt, who had come under intense criticism from both parents and staff after four years as principal, will resign her position effective January 1, 2014.[59][60]
- December 20 – The 7-bedroom, 7,180 square foot house at 2142 Haycock Road in Falls Church burns for the third time in just over three years.[61]
