- May 4, 1949 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves a proposal by supervisor C. B. Runyon to put a paid firefighter in each of the county's 11 volunteer departments, and to establish a central control and dispatch system.
- May 4, 2012 – 21-year-old Shelinda D. Arrington is run over and killed by 32-year-old Gloria A. McMillan when Arrington confronts McMillan on Harrison Lane in the Groveton section of Alexandria.
