January
- January 20 – The Richard E. Byrd Library in Springfield is dedicated in anticipation of its opening on January 22.[1]
February
- February 6 – 52-year-old storekeeper Percy Simms is shot to death by 21-year-old Army cook Garvie Haven Hall during a botched robbery at his store in Lorton.[2][3] Hall and his accomplice, 28-year-old hospital corpsman Calvin W. Pruitt, flee the scene, leaving untouched the $300 in the store's cash register.[2]
- February 13 – 40-year-old guard Michael J. Hughes, Jr. is beaten and stabbed to death in the day room of Dormitory 13 at the Lorton Reformatory by Gumersindo P. Gomez and John F. Schoppel.[4][5]
March
- Fairfax County Police Lieutenant Stanley H. Dodson takes command of the Groveton substation.[6]
June
- June 1 – 13-year-old Gloria Jean Lilly drowns in the swimming pool of the Belleview Apartments at 601 Belle View Boulevard in Alexandria.[7][8]
- June 2 – 47-year-old Russell Gantt fatally stabs his brother in law, 55-year-old Ted R. Strom, and pistol whips his sister Ruth after she shoots him in the chest at the couple's home on Waples Mill Road in Oakton.[9]
- June 16 – Attempting to get out of a series of traffic tickets written to him by Fairfax County Police Private Olin F. Sanders, Clinton E. Turner stupidly manages to turn a few misdemeanor offenses into a felony when he offers Sanders a $5 bribe.[10]
- June 27 – A three-judge panel grants the Town of Fairfax the right to annex over three square miles of Fairfax County, more than doubling the town's size. The grant is effective January 1, 1959.[11]
July
- July 10 – 13-year-old Michael L. Carrico drowns at a swimming party at Timberlake in Oakton. His body is recovered when it floats to the top two days later.[12]
August
- August 17 – 21-year-old Richard E. Lee drowns while swimming in the gravel pits of the Northern Virginia Construction Company in Springfield.[13]
September
- September 5 – The Crestwood Construction corporation deeds a 2½-acre tract at Highland Road and Atteentee Road to the Springfield Volunteer Fire Department for the construction of a new station house.[14]
- September 14 – 12-year-old Preston Pitts is struck in the left temple with a baseball and killed when he runs across the infield while the competing teams are warming up for a game in Centreville. Pitts is taken to Manassas Medical Center, where he is pronounced dead.[15]
November
- November 19 – The Fairfax County Water Authority announces it has been awarded the franchise to supply water to the new airport in Chantilly.[16]
December
- December 28 – 23-year-old Albert W. Rogers fatally shoots himself with a 12 gauge shotgun in the back yard of his mother's house in Burke.[17]
- December 31 – Fairfax County Police Detective Sergeant David R. Eike, previously serving as the head of the Juvenile Squad, is promoted to lieutenant, becoming an administrative assistant to Chief William L. Durrer. His role at the Juvenile Squad is taken over by Detective Corporal Richard H. Lester. Also promoted is Traffic Safety Officer Paul S. Dove, to the rank of sergeant.[18]
