January
- January 3 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors files suits seeking to condemn the facilities of the Alexandria Water Company and the Woodlawn Water Company, seeking to sell them to the Fairfax County Water Authority.[1]
March
- March 18 – 39-year-old Edward L. Jordan settles an argument with 39-year-old Elijah E. Snyder by shooting Snyder in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol on Route 123 near the Maple Wood Farm near McLean.[2]
May
- May 3 – 39-year-old Robert Thaxton is convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison for the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Walter G. Hill.[3]
- May 31 – Adelard L. Brault is appointed by Judge Paul E. Brown as the Supervisor for the Providence District, replacing James Keith, who left to run for a seat on the Fairfax City Council.[4]
June
- June 28 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves the rezoning of a 47,000-square-foot tract in Falls Church, allowing the construction of a 22-unit apartment building for African Americans, the first such project in over a decade.[5]
July
- July 26 – The 12.4-acre property that will become the Bradlick Shopping Center is rezoned by a 4-3 vote of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.[6]
August
- August 25 – 42-year-old Air Force Sergeant Victor A. Tatum fatally shoots his ex-wife Rebecca's new boyfriend, 37-year-old Raymond D. Burke, then shoots himself in the head at her apartment in the Ravenwood Towers at 221 Leesburg Pike in Falls Church. Tatum had hidden in a closet and ambushed the pair with a .38 caliber pistol when they went into her bedroom after a date. Tatum is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies on August 30.[7][8][9]
September
- September 1 – After catching John C. Vinson, Jr. peeping through the windows of the family house at 1317 Jefferson Avenue in Falls Church, 17-year-old honor student Lewis M. Goldfein is fatally shot by Vinson when Goldfein confronts him.[10][11]
October
- October 19 – A hayride in Great Falls ends in tragedy when 19-year-old Rosalie F. Hillow is killed when the truck, driven by Joseph A. Kennahan, runs off the Georgetown Pike and crashes into a tree, throwing her from the vehicle.[12]
November
- November 5 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors fires the entire Fairfax County School Board when the school board refuses to turn over the job of school construction to the county government. Two members of the old board, Waldron Leonard and John D. K. Smoot, are reappointed, representing Mount Vernon and Dranesville, and two new members, Martha Gertwagen and Eugene L. Newman, are appointed.[13]
December
- December 25 – 39-year-old insurance saleseman Frank E. Eakin shoots and kills 36-year-old Edith R. O'Day, then fatally wounds himself at her home at 1608 South West Street in Falls Church. Eakin is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[14][15]
