Daniel A. Domenech
Dr. Daniel A. "Dan" Domenech (b. July 21, 1945) was the superintendent of the Fairfax County Public Schools system from 1998 to 2004.
Early life and education
Born in Cuba, Domenech moved to the United States when he was nine years old.
Domenech graduated from Hunter College in New York with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1967. He later took his Ph.D. in education research from Hofstra University in 1977.
Career
Domenech began his professional career teaching the sixth grade in South Jamaica neighborhood of Queens in New York City. Realizing that teaching in the ghetto was not the fulfillment of his life's dream, he next became the program director for the Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
Domenech became the superintendent of the Deer Park School District on Long Island in 1978. He later served from 1981 to 1994 as the superintendent of the South Huntington School District, also on Long Island.
In August 1993, Domenech was short-listed as one of eight candidates for the position of New York City Schools Chancellor, with the position ultimately going to Ramon C. Cortines.[1]
Dr. Domenech's next position was as District Superintendent of the Board of Cooperative Educational Services for western Suffolk County.
In 1995, Dr. Domenech was again on the list of candidates for New York City Schools Chancellor (which also included FCPS Superintendent Robert R. Spillane) to replace the outgoing Ramon C. Cortines. On September 29, Domenech was chosen as Chancellor by the New York City Board of Education following a 4-3 vote, but pressure from Mayor Rudy Giuliani caused the Board of Education to withdraw its offer the following day.[2][3]
In April 1997, Dr. Domenech was one of the top three contenders to become superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District.[4] Domenech withdrew his name from consideration later that month when it became apparent that deputy superintendent Ruben Zacarias was the overwhelming favorite.[5]
On November 12, 1997, Dr. Domenech was chosen as superintendent by the Fairfax County School Board in an 8-4 party line vote over Madison, Wisconsin superintendent Cheryl W. Wilhoyte.[6]
After leaving FCPS, Dr. Domenech went to work for McGraw-Hill Education as Senior Vice President of National Urban Markets in March 2004.
In July 2008, Dr. Domenech became the executive director of the American Association of School Administrators.
