January
- David P. Bobzien is appointed County Attorney by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.[1]
- January 17 - A police chase by an Arlington County Police officer ends when the suspect's stolen Toyota Tercel broadsides a Subaru at the intersection of Broad and Washington streets in Falls Church, killing 43-year-old Lemon Road Elementary School principal Emory W. Burchett and his daughters, 12-year-old Kara and 8-year-old Rena.[2][3]
- January 25 - Mir Aimal Kasi, a Pakistani national, opens fire on a line of cars waiting to enter the Central Intelligence Agency's Langley headquarters. Kansi kills 28-year-old Frank Darling and 66-year-old Dr. Lansing H. Bennett, and injures Nicholas Starr, Calvin Morgan, and Stephen E. Williams.[4]
February
- February 5 – The Federal Realty Investment Trust purchases the Pan Am Shopping Center for $21,250,000.
- February 23 – 37-year-old Nancy Koppel is killed when she pulls her 1990 Dodge Shadow in front of a 1990 Toyota Four-Runner driven by 42-year-old off-duty Fairfax County Police Lieutenant Colin Morgan on Stringfellow Road in Chantilly and is struck.[5]
March
- March 5 – Springfield Mall becomes the first shopping mall in Fairfax County to ban smoking in its public areas.[6]
- March 13 – Michael Martin is stabbed to death by James Cowan at the maximum security facility of the Lorton Correctional Complex.
- March 28 – The 36-inch Colonial Pipeline buried near the parking lot of the Reston Hospital Center ruptures, sending a 100-foot geyser of diesel oil spraying into the air in Reston, eventually spilling over 400,000 gallons of the fuel and polluting the nearby Sugarland Run.[7]
April
- April 21 – 33-year-old Rory R. Randolph is stabbed to death by Raynaldo Brandon and James Smith at the Lorton Correctional Complex to satisfy an unpaid debt.[8]
- April 22 – 35-year-old Krista L. Knott is fatally injured in a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Backlick and Edsall Road in Springfield when the car she is driving is broadsided by a pickup truck. Knott is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[9][10]
May
- May 6 – 2-year-old Bladimir Ventura drowns in Lake Barton in Burke while playing with his 3-year-old sister. The child is pulled out of the water by a passerby, but dies of his injuries at Fairfax Hospital on May 9.[11]
- May 29 – 8-month-old Mario Roberto Sierra drowns in Lake Accotink when his family's canoe overturns. The child's body is found by Fairfax County police divers the next day.[12]
June
- June 10 – John Kowalczyk is shot to death in Vienna by hired killer Ralph N. Shambaugh, Jr..[13][14]
- June 11 – 38-year-old Marine Gunnery Sergeant Dale H. Fredericks is murdered in front of his friend's Penn Daw home in Alexandria by 19-year-old Kamal S. Muwwakkil, who blows Fredericks' head off with a shotgun in order to steal his 1987 Mazda RX-7.[15][16]
- June 28 – The Burke Centre Mini-Library in Burke is heavily damaged in an arson fire.[17]
July
- July 8 – 37-year-old Jeanette G. Harper proves herself to be a terrible house guest when she fatally stabs her host, 71-year-old Ada G. Sanderson, in Sanderson's house at 2909 Rogers Drive in Falls Church.[18]
- July 31 – 17-year-old William W. Crocker, IV is shot in the head and mortally wounded by 19-year-old Rick E. Herring at a construction site in the 7500 block of Dudrow Road in Springfield.[19]
August
- August 4 – 45-year-old Fairfax County Park Authority clerk Teresa L. Thornton is stabbed to death by her ex-husband, William J. Thornton, outside the Authority's offices on Pender Drive in Fairfax.[20][21]
- August 8 – Fairfax County Police Officers Wellford M. Brock, III and John A. Absalon fatally shoot 59-year-old Gloria Richardson at her home in Fairfax when she points a gun at them in a suicide-by-cop. Richardson is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.[22][23]
September
- September 24 – Fairfax Hospital signs a conciliation agreement in which they agree to pay nearly $604,000 to 52 female managers to settle allegations of sex bias made by the U.S. Department of Labor.[24]
October
- October 24 – 41-year-old Jesus B. Arreaga is shot and mortally wounded by Fairfax County police officer Frank Stecco when Arreaga reaches for a knife in his belt in the stairway of the Meadow Woods Apartments in Alexandria. Arreaga is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies early the next morning following surgery.[25]
- October 28 – Herndon police officers Michael B. Berg and Lawrence A. Whitmer shoot and mortally wound 24-year-old Jonathan S. Smith, who had broken into his ex-girlfriend's Herndon townhouse and barricaded himself inside, when he threatens the officers with a knife. Smith is taken to the Reston Hospital Center, where he dies.[26]
- October 29 – On her way to a party to celebrate her recent birthday, 14-year-old Christina Winkler is killed by 38-year-old drunk driver Sheila D. Hostetter as she and her 14-year-old friend Lane attempt to cross Reston Parkway in Reston.[27]
November
- November 2 – Fairfax County voters overwhelmingly approve a referendum allowing for the direct election of members of the Fairfax County School Board.[28]
- November 6 – 27-year-old security guard Tina F. Ricca is shot to death at the construction site of the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly.[29]
December
- December 2 – 33-year-old Candy A. Wharton is convicted of volunary manslaughter for fatally stabbing her 21-year-old boyfriend, Timothy W. Easley, in Centreville on the morning of February 18, 1989.[30]
Crime
64 people were killed in 59 fatal traffic crashes in Fairfax County in 1993. 20 of those crashes involved alcohol.
