- January 7 – 30-year-old Loan P. Nguyen and her 22-month-old daughter Ashley N. Ton are murdered by Dinh N. Pham following a botched burglary attempt at the family home at 2877 Lester Lee Court in Falls Church.[1][2]
- January 26 – Lieutenant Colonel Suzanne G. Devlin is named acting Chief of Police by County Executive Anthony H. Griffin, replacing J. Thomas Manger.[3]
February
- February 29 – 28-year-old Fitsum Gebreegziabher is struck and killed in Springfield by Josuel P. Galdino. Gebreegziabher becomes entangled with the Mitsubishi Montero driven by Galdino, who leaves the scene and drags Gebreegziabher 8½ miles to his home in the Lorton Station neighborhood of Lorton.[4]
March
- March 5 – The resignation of Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Daniel A. Domenech becomes effective.[5]
- March 5 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Kathleen H. MacKay sentences 31-year-old Marlo L. Small to 38 years in prison for murdering his ex-wife Michele I. Quiles as she sat in her car in Annandale on April 24, 2002.[6]
April
- April 3 – Fairfax County Police Captain Jack Hurlock takes over command of the West Springfield District Station from Captain Dorian Portee.[7]
- April 4 – 19-year-old Cristian J. Aranzana-Vasquez, a member of the South Side Locos youth organization, is shot and mortally wounded in the parking lot of the Days Inn at 6100 Richmond Highway in Alexandria by 22-year-old Cory J. Wilkins, a member of the La Primera youth organization, to settle a dispute between Aranzana-Vasquez and 19-year-old Donnie A. Barnes. Aranzana-Vasquez is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[8][9]
May
- May 16 – 17-year-old Herndon High School student Jose Sandoval is shot and killed in Herndon by Alirio Reyes, a 26-year-old member of the MS-13 youth organization.[10][11]
- May 20 – Mike Campbell is named the new principal of Westfield High School following the departure of Dale Rumberger to open the new South County High School.[12]
June
- June 7 – 50-year-old Scott LeClaire settles an argument over money with his 52-year-old brother Randall by fatally shooting Randall in his home at 2506 Massey Court in Huntington.[13][14]
- June 10 – 20-year-old Kathryn A. Southard is killed when her 1992 Subaru Legacy is struck by a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 25-year-old Oscar Rene Bonilla as she attempts to make a left turn onto Old Keene Mill Road from Byron Avenue in Springfield. Bonilla crashes into a tree and runs away from the scene.[15]
- June 13 – Six-year-old Sean Campbell runs into the street on Tis Well Drive in the River Farms neighborhood of Alexandria, where he is struck and killed by a Fairfax Connector bus driven by Santos Ruiz.[16][17]
July
- July 11 – An early morning fire at 6915 Mary Caroline Circle in the Victoria Crossings condominium complex in Alexandria kills 68-year-old Sadia B. Mohammad, her 36-year-old daughter Anisa A. Yassin, and 16-year-old Iftu J. Salah.[18][19]
- July 12 – David M. Rohrer is appointed Chief of the Fairfax County Police Department.[20]
- July 24 – 16-year-old Luke Tiahrt hangs himself at the family home at 9360 Tovito Drive in Fairfax.[21]
August
- August 30 – While attempting to cross Richmond Highway near Fernedge Lane in Lorton, 25-year-old Marcus Bigsby is struck by three vehicles and mortally injured. Bigsby is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[22][23]
October
- October 22 – After assaulting his former girlfriend at gunpoint, then stabbing her, 38-year-old security guard Esdibar Rosero commits suicide at the Tysons Corner Center by shooting himself in the back of the Lenkersdorfer jewelry store.[24]
- October 22 – Josuel P. Galdino is sentenced to 16 months in prison by Judge Arthur B. Vieregg for unintentionally killing Fitsum Gebreegziabher on February 29.[25]
- October 26 – Supervisor Gerry Connolly is found not guilty of leaving the scene of a May 14 accident in Tysons Corner.[26]
November
- November 6 – Captain Susan H. Culin takes over command of the Fairfax County Police Department's Sully District Station from Captain Bill Gulsby.[27]
- November 14 – A fire in his first-floor condominium at 1432 Northgate Square in Reston kills 53-year-old Jeffrey Kerrigan.[28][29]
- November 25 – Darius T. Hicks fatally shoots 21-year-old Shawndre N. Fulton, who was eight months pregnant with his daughter, in the Mount Vernon Woods Park in Alexandria.[30]
December
- December 4 – 35-year-old Glenn Donsanto dies in a fire at his father's home at 1925 Batten Hollow Road in Vienna.[31][32]
- December 6 – 14-year-old Rody J. Phillips stabs and mortally wounds 60-year-old clerk Sun Ku Kwon at the 7-Eleven at 5638 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy in Alexandria.[33][34] Kwon is airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[34]
- December 9 – 26-year-old Oscar Omar Ramos Hernandez pleads guilty in Circuit Court to the kidnapping, rape, and murder of 24-year-old Diana Garcia in Falls Church on August 13, 2001.[35]
- December 23 – Macerich announces their planned purchase of the Wilmorite real estate investment trust, whose portfolio includes Tysons Corner Center.[36]
- December 27 – A fire at the parsonage at the Maranatha Baptist Church at 3511 Annandale Road in Annandale kills 42-year-old Terry Maye.[37]
- December 30 – 25-year-old James L. Ridley is shot to death in his car during a failed robbery by James A. Erby in the parking lot of the Subway in the Spring Mall Center in Springfield.[38][39]
