Events that took place in Fairfax County in January, 2008:
- January 11 – 51-year-old police snitch Brent U. Shorter is fatally shot by a Fairfax County Police officer behind a restaurant in the Rose Hill Shopping Center in the Franconia area of Alexandria when he refuses repeated commands to drop the knife he is waving around. Shorter is taken to the Inova HealthPlex, where he is pronounced dead.[1][2]
- January 12 – An early morning fire in apartment 211 at the Cavalier Club Apartments at 6200 Wilson Boulevard in Falls Church fatally burns 39-year-old Mark C. Williams. Williams is taken to Washington Burn Center, where he dies the following day.[3][4]
- January 13 – 37-year-old Santos Bonifacio Gomez-Lopez is struck by the driver of a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta in the 7000 block of Little River Turnpike, who stops and calls police. Two more cars then run over Gomez-Lopez, but neither one stops. Gomez-Lopez is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies of his injuries on January 22.[5]
- January 26 – 35-year-old Odis M. Reyes Lazo is found shot to death in his home at 5904 Otley Drive in the Huntington area of Alexandria.[6]
- January 26 – The new City of Fairfax Regional Library opens.[7]
