Events that took place in Fairfax County in January, 2017:
- January 7 – Following a $7.1 million, 15-month renovation, the Pohick Regional Library in Burke reopens.[1]
- January 8 – 15-year-old Damaris A. Reyes Rivas is stabbed to death in Springfield by 17-year-old Venus Romero Iraheta at the instigation of 17-year-old Jose Cerrato, a member of the MS-13 youth organization. Reyes Rivas was killed for her role in luring 21-year-old Christian Sosa Rivas to his murder in Prince William County the previous month.[2]
- January 10 – 43-year-old Jose L. Merida is killed when the driver of the 1987 Chevrolet van he is riding in crashes into a tree on Centreville Road near the intersection of Bradenton Drive in Centreville.[3]
- January 10 – 61-year-old Arsalos Cekci unintentionally kills herself when she loses control of the 2007 Toyota Camry she is driving and crashes on Trap Road in Vienna. Cekci is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[4]
- January 16 – 32-year-old Mohammad Azim Doudzai is fatally shot by a Fairfax County police officer when he lunges at the police with a knife at his townhouse at 13316 Covered Wagon Lane in the McNair Farms neighborhood of Herndon. Doudzai had shot his two brothers, aged 37 and 23, when they attempted to mediate an argument between himself and his 28-year-old girlfriend, took his 29-year-old roommate hostage, then set the townhouse on fire before finally confronting the cops.[5][6]
- January 26 – 21-year-old Paola Estrada Izaguirre is killed when the 18-year-old driver of the 2007 Golf she is riding in loses control of the car and crashes on Clifton Road in Fairfax Station.[7]
- January 26 – 52-year-old Hong Chen fatally shoots his wife, 48-year-old Shirley H. Zhou, and 16-year-old son James, then commits suicide at the family home at 1339 Windy Hill Road in McLean. The corpses are discovered the next day by a family member, who calls police.[8]
