John P. Parrish
John Poindexter Parrish (January 1, 1920 – March 30, 2008) was an attorney and the supervisor for the Mount Vernon District from 1960 to 1966.
One of six children of Forrest D. Parrish and the former Frances L. "Alice" Flynn, Parrish was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Fairfax County.[1] He graduated from Lee-Jackson High School in 1939.[2]
During World War II, Parrish served on board destroyers in both the Atlantic and Pacific.[1] Shortly after the war, Parrish graduated from George Washington University, and took his LLB in 1950.
In 1951, Parrish sought the Democratic nomination for the Mount Vernon District seat on the Board of Supervisors, but lost to incumbent Arthur I. Shaffer.
Parrish has more success in obtaining the Democratic nomination in 1955 against Jane H. Wellemeyer, but lost in the general election to Republican Richard P. Ovenshine by 94 votes.[3]
In 1959, Parrish again sought the Democratic nomination for the Mount Vernon District seat, but lost to George C. Landrith, who went on to win in the November general election.[3]
When Supervisor Landrith resigned from the board just five months into his term, Circuit Court Judge Paul E. Brown appointed Parrish to the seat on June 8, 1960.[4]
Following his indictment by a Federal grand jury on charges of conspiracy to commit bribery and facing impeachment proceedings, Parrish had himself suspended from the BoS on October 5, 1966.[5][6]
Personal
Parrish married the former Frances A. Richmond on March 27, 1948.[7]
