- August 17, 1907 – Judge Louis C. Barley, Sr. resigns as judge of the 16th Circuit, which includes the City of Alexandria as well as Alexandria, Fairfax and Prince William counties. It is speculated that Judge Barley's resignation was prompted by overwork, as he had retained his seat as Judge of the Alexandria Corporation Court in addition to his duties on the Circuit Court.
- August 17, 1932 – F. Norvell Larkin resigns his positions as county engineer and county manager. Randolph M. Loughborough is appointed acting county manager pending Larkin's replacement.
- August 17, 1958 – 21-year-old Richard E. Lee drowns while swimming in the gravel pits of the Northern Virginia Construction Company in Springfield.
- August 17, 1976 – 31-year-old manager James D. Cox, Jr. is shot to death in the 7-Eleven at 7330 Richmond Highway in Alexandria during a bungled robbery by Kenny Bryant.
- August 17, 1989 – 20-year-old Joseph D. Bowler, Jr. is shot to death in the parking lot of the Rosedale Manor Apartments in Bailey's Crossroads by 18-year-old Carlton Eley.
- August 17, 1992 – The body of 30-year-old Dolores Mejia is found floating in Lake Barton in Burke by a passerby.
- August 17, 1995 – 19-year-old Edward Y. Chen fatally shoots his parents, 53-year-old Wu-Hung Chen and 52-year-old Yeh-Mei Chen, and 25-year-old brother Raymond at their home at 11210 Elmview Place in Great Falls.
