- January 2, 1965 – The Lee Highway Drive-In Theatre movie theater is robbed of $1214 by two men.
- January 2, 1974 – 19-year-old John K. Riffe commits suicide after exchanging gunfire with and wounding Fairfax County Police Officer James Nagler at Riffe's family home at 3912 Rive Drive in Mount Vernon.
- January 2, 1990 – 29-year-old Kris Lawson is killed on Interstate 66 near Centreville when his 1985 Nissan is struck by a pickup truck driven by Samuel Smilie that crosses the median strip and hits Lawson's car head on.
- January 2, 1996 – 48-year-old Constance M. Hiner is beaten to death in her home at 1600 Woodstock Lane in Reston.
- January 2, 1999 – 17-year-old Troy Wooten mortally injures 21-year-old Jason Baughman when he provides the coda to Baughman's assault on his pregnant ex-girlfriend Megan Craig by smashing Baughman's skull with a two-foot steel pipe. Baughman is flown to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies two days later.
