January
- January 2 – 29-year-old Kris Lawson is killed on Interstate 66 near Centreville when his 1985 Nissan is struck by a pickup truck driven by Samuel Smilie that crosses the median strip and hits Lawson's car head on.[1]
- January 12 – 28-year-old Jerry Lee Dunbar is sentenced to life in prison by Judge Johanna L. Fitzpatrick for the murder of Deirdre Smith in the spring of 1989.[2]
- January 29 – Following his second trial, 37-year-old Raheem Abdul Muhammad is found guilty of the murder of 18-year-old clerk Vinay K. Bhatia in Alexandria on September 9, 1989.[3]
February
- February 4 – The body of 27-year-old Franklin Ruiz is found in the Washington House restaurant at 5863 Columbia Pike in Falls Church. The county medical examiner determines Ruiz died after falling and breaking his neck.[4]
March
- March 3 – Construction workers rupture a gas line outside the food court entrance of the Springfield Mall in Springfield, causing the mall's evacuation.[5]
- March 6 – 53-year-old Richard Schaefer is shot to death by his estranged wife, 46-year-old Patricia S. Schaefer, on the front porch of her home at 3908 Prosperity Avenue in Fairfax.[6]
- March 7 – Carl R. Peed is appointed Sheriff of Fairfax County by a panel of Circuit Court judges led by Lewis H. Griffith, replacing the departed M. Wayne Huggins.[7]
- March 18 – 34-year-old Henry L. Boone is shot several times and mortally wounded at 3804 El Camino Place in Alexandria. Boone is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies on the morning of March 22.[8]
- March 20 – 40-year-old John P. Langford fatally shoots his 36-year-old estranged wife Betty with a .44 magnum handgun in his home at 7047 Canterbury Lane in Alexandria.[9][10]
- March 26 – By a 6 to 3 vote, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves a scheme to sell $330 million in revenue bonds to finance construction of the Fairfax County Parkway. By choosing to issue revenue bonds, the BoS avoids having to allow county voters to approve a referendum, which would be required for general obligation bonds, but incurs an additional $3.5 million in interest charges.[11]
April
- April 7 – The Lorton Library opens.[12]
- April 8 – While fleeing the scene of another crash, 26-year-old Juan Landeros kills 54-year-old Mabel Rastatter and 84-year-old Esther B. Rastatter and fatally injures 58-year-old Joseph A. Rastatter when Landeros crashes the 1979 Mercury Marquis he is driving head-on into the Rastatters' 1989 Nissan Sentra. Joseph Rastatter is flown to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies.[13][14]
- April 26 – 22-year-old Rita Morris is stabbed to death in the parking lot of the Statesman Motel at 5963 Richmond Highway in Alexandria by 18-year-old Kendra L. Geter to settle a disagreement between Morris and Geter's mother.[15][16][17]
- April 26 – 26-year-old Saturino Teyes is shot to death when he comes home obnoxiously drunk and gets into an argument with housemate Francisco Cabrera at 2200 Lofty Heights Place in Reston.[15]
May
- May 1 – 18-year-old high school senior Jerry E. Minnick commits suicide in the most metal as fuck way possible by deliberately riding his motorcycle into a brick wall at high speed at Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria.[18][19]
- May 5 – The groundbreaking for the Centreville Regional Library takes place.[20]
June
- June 1 – Alexandria psychiatrist Paul J. Peckar is seriously injured when a mail bomb explodes in his office in the Sherwood Hall Medical Center in Mount Vernon.[21]
- June 20 – 31-year-old hospital orderly Karl A. Bodden is stabbed and beaten to death outside his Centreville apartment by 23-year-old Venancio Romero Cabanas.[22][23]
July
- July 19 – 45-year-old Alexander C. Bridewell, III shoots his 47-year-old wife Barbara Jane to death, then commits suicide in the couple's home at 5555 Renoir Port Lane in Burke.[24]
- July 23 – 18-year-old Kendra L. Geter pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter for fatally stabbing 22-year-old Rita Morris in the back during a fight between Morris and Geter's mother Martha at the Statesman Motel in Alexandria on April 26.[25]
- July 23 – By a 7-0 vote, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves an ordinance allowing developers to build at a 20% higher density than otherwise zoned in exchange for setting aside 12½% of the units constructed for purchase or rental by people with low incomes.[26]
August
- August 4 – 15-year-old Rebecca L. Reese is raped and murdered in Chantilly by 21-year-old Preston C. Brown.[27][28]
- August 8 – 19-year-old Gordon Stewart is shanked in the shower at the Lorton Reformatory's Youth Center I by Nathan Price.[29][30] Stewart is taken to the center's clinic, where he is pronounced dead.[29]
- August 30 – Nine-year-old Veronica R. Covarrubias is fatally injured on the Shirley Highway in Springfield when Mohammed E. Islam falls asleep behind the wheel of his 1973 Pontiac LeMans and crashes into her family's Toyota Corolla at 65 miles per hour just south of the Edsall Road interchange. The five other members of the Covarrubias family are extracted from the Corolla and taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, but the car is so thoroughly destroyed that no one notices Veronica still entrapped in the wreckage, which is taken to Franconia Towing and Storage on Vine Street in Alexandria. Veronica's corpse is finally discovered about five hours later, and the lie is told that she died on impact to spare everyone the horror of her lonely death in the crushed car.[31]
- August 31 – While visiting friends, Paul S. Harley is shot to death in a townhouse in the 9600 block of Hagel Circle.[32]
September
- September 9 – 29-year-old Nhoeung Khlaut strangles her 4-year-old son, Thi Nguyen, and her 11-month-old daughter, Vuy Thi Mihn Nguyen, at a relative's house in Herndon, then stashes their corpses in a downstairs closet.[33]
- September 11 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Thomas J. Middleton sentences 23-year-old Venancio Romero Cabanas to 12 years in prison for the murder of Karl A. Bodden in Centreville on June 19.[34]
- September 17 – 25-year-old Robert A. Miller beats and stomps 8-year-old Destiny Souza to death in the basement of her family's Springfield townhouse.[35][36][37]
- September 18 – Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder appoints District Court Judge Marcus D. Williams to the Fairfax Circuit Court to replace the retiring Judge Lewis H. Griffith, making Williams the first black judge to sit on the bench of that court.[38]
- September 22 – 61-year-old columnist Triet Le and his 52-year-old wife Tuyet Thi Dangtran are shot to death in the driveway of their home at 3615 Dannys Lane in Alexandria.[39][40]
- September 23 – 46-year-old Jimmy D. Hardy, Sr. is shot to death by 26-year-old Shari Thomas in a room at the Traveler's Motel at 5916 Richmond Highway in Alexandria.[40][41]
- September 25 – 23-year-old clerk Mohammad Jamal Tafwiz is shot to death during a robbery at an Alexandria 7-Eleven by 19-year-old Louis V. Arai.[42][43]
October
- October 7 – 31-year-old Robin M. Jones is raped, robbed and drowned in the bathtub of her apartment at 4001 Spring Pond Place in the Shenandoah Crossing Apartments in Fairfax by Thomas Reed, Jr..[44][45][46]
- October 10 – Circuit Court Judge William G. Plummer strikes down an ordinance restricting office development in the county.[47]
- October 16 – 30-year-old Carla J. Porritt pleads guilty to first-degree murder for suffocating her two-month-old son William in Fairfax on May 30, 1987.[48]
November
- November 3 – 17-year-old Robin M. Anderson is fatally shot in his car on Richmond Highway by 18-year-old Robert R. Redfearn. One of his passengers drives him to the Mount Vernon Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[49][50][51]
- November 6 – 29-year-old Raymond C. McKiver is fatally stabbed to settle an argument at his home at 7222 Fordson Road in Alexandria. McKiver is flown to the Fairfax Hospital, where he dies about two hours later, becoming the 25th homicide victim for the year in the county.[51][52]
- November 13 – 22-year-old Nathan Price enters an Alford plea before Judge Michael P. McWeeny and is convicted of the August 8 murder of 19-year-old Gordon Stewart at the Lorton Youth Center.[30]
- November 15 – 22-year-old Preston C. Brown is convicted of first-degree murder and rape for his killing of Rebecca L. Reese in Chantilly on August 4.[53]
- November 25 – 37-year-old Paulette Griffin is fatally stabbed in her home at 4501 Stone Pine Court in Chantilly by her husband, 46-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Bruce N. Griffin. Paulette is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where she dies.[54][55]
December
- December 2 – 22-year-old Robert B. Ennis, Jr. stabs 20-year-old Jamie Friend to death on Popes Head Road in Clifton in an incident of road rage.[56][57]
- December 2 – 77-year-old Margaret Masnik is struck and killed by 23-year-old Pedro Carranza as she crosses Leesburg Pike at South Jefferson Street in Bailey's Crossroads. Carranza flees the scene, and Masnik is taken to Alexandria Hospital, where she is pronounced dead.[58][59]
- December 4 – 19-year-old Louis V. Arai is convicted of first-degree murder, robbery, and use of a firearm for shooting 7-Eleven clerk Mohammad Jamal Tafwiz in a penny-ante robbery in the Lincolnia area of Alexandria on September 25 which netted Arai a total of eight dollars.[60]
Crime
There were 27 murders or other homicides in Fairfax County in 1990.[61]
69 people were killed in 61 traffic crashes in Fairfax County in 1990. 30 of those crashes involved alcohol.
