- January 1, 1952 – Former Henrico County Executive Carlton C. Massey is chosen as the first Fairfax County Executive by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
- January 1, 1955 – 65-year-old Cecil Coleman is suffocated when a fire caused by an overheating stove breaks out in his trailer home, parked near Woodburn Road in Annandale.
- January 1, 1956 – Following a New Year's Eve celebration, 45-year-old retired Navy Lieutenant Commander Robert B. Rueger drunkenly shoots 35-year-old obnoxious party guest Leonard Dodson in the driveway of Reuger's house on Beulah Road in Franconia. The party had been broken up by a fistfight between Rueger and Dodson, and as Dodson was leaving, Reuger shot him six times, the last three after Dodson had collapsed on the ground, just in time for Fairfax County Police Private Robert E. Pillow to witness the shooting as he and Private Phillip Powell pulled up in their squad car.
- January 1, 1977 – 45-year-old James E. Lawrence is shot and mortally wounded with a .38 caliber handgun by his 46-year-old wife, Shirley Mae, to settle an argument at their home at 3742 Camelot Drive in Annandale. Lawrence dies of his wounds a few hours later.
- January 1, 1980 – Frederick F. Burhans, Jr. is shot and killed and William V. Sitko is mortally wounded in a gun battle in the apartment of David W. Kaiser at 3915 Lyndhurst Drive in Fairfax. Sitko is taken to the Washington Hospital Center, where he dies of his injuries early the next morning.
- January 1, 1982 – 18-year-old Susan Herzog is killed by 17-year-old drunk driver Kevin Tunell when he loses control of his silver Dodge station wagon and crashes head-on into Herzog's Volkswagen on Commonwealth Boulevard in Fairfax.
- January 1, 2000 – 16-year-old Oakton High School junior Jennifer Parnell is killed when she turns her vehicle into the path of station wagon at the intersection of Lawyers Road and Myrtle Lane in Reston.
- January 1, 2009 – 31-year-old Joseph A. Taylor dies in a single-car crash in Herndon.
- January 1, 2014 – 41-year-old Serena L. Vierimaa dies of a gunshot wound at her home at 7108 Healy Drive in Springfield.
