January
- January 1 – 22-year-old Arthur W. Stewart kills 26-year-old James F. Corum with a shotgun when Corum brings a knife to a gunfight at a New Year's Eve party at the rural home of Henry A. Brown, Jr. in Chantilly.[1][2]
- January 1 – The head of the Fairfax County Police Department's Juvenile Bureau, Sergeant Richard H. Lester, is promoted to lieutenant and becomes the second-in-command of the Detective Bureau. Corporal William H. Conner becomes a sergeant and is assigned as supervisor of the Communications Section. Privates Daniel W. Kriss, James L. Wilt and Lee T. Poole are all promoted to the rank of corporal.[3]
- January 2 – The Lee Highway Drive-In Theatre movie theater is robbed of $1214 by two men.[4]
- January 7 – 33-year-old George Adams pleads guilty to the murder of Hyman Meyers during a robbery at Meyers' store in Oakton on July 30, 1964. Circuit Court Judge Arthur W. Sinclair sentences Adams to 30 years in prison.[5]
- January 18 – At a meeting called by Arlington Delegate Kathryn Stone and Director of the Northern Virginia Center of the University of Virginia Dean E. Brundage, 70 officials from Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William and Loudoun counties, as well as the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, agree to collaborate on obtaining a vocational school for the Northern Virginia region.[6][7]
- January 20 – Five children, 9-year-old Barbara Jean Ellis, 7-year-old Caroline Raymond, 4-year-old Paul A. Raymond, Jr., 8-year-old Phillip M. Connor and 6-year-old Cynthia Lou Connor, fall through the ice of the Hunting Creek in the Huntington area of Alexandria and drown. The corpses of Caroline and Paul are recovered about two hours later, followed by that of Barbara Jean later that evening. Cynthia and Philip's corpses are found on January 22.[8][9][10][11]
February
- February 3 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors votes 4-2 to set up a task force to study the possibility of incorporating the county as a city.[12]
- February 12 – An early morning fire in the home at 1301 Putnam Street in Falls Church kills 51-year-old Cynthia G. Griffin and her two adopted sons, 2-year-old Philip and 3-year-old Donald.[13]
March
- The new Richard Byrd Library opens in Springfield.[14]
- March 28 – 35-year-old Solomon L. Hicks settles a drunken argument about civil rights at his Dunn Loring home with 39-year-old Romine Williams by fatally shooting Williams.[15][16]
April
- April 11 – 19-year-old Nicholas C. Finamore kills 15-year-old Catherine M. Atkinson, 14-year-old Amelia A. Shepard, 17-year-olds Gregory P. White and John H. Williamson, and mortally injures 16-year-old Chris Drury when he runs a red light at the intersection of Dolley Madison Boulevard and Old Dominion Drive in McLean, smashing the dump truck he is driving into a compact car carrying the five teenagers. Drury is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where he dies on April 19.[17][18]
- April 19 – 22-year-old Kenzie R. Locke unintentionally kills himself when he crashes into a utility pole on Beacon Hill Road in Alexandria.[19]
- April 19 – 59-year-old James F. Hubbard is killed by 26-year-old James D. Horsley when Horsley broadsides Hubbard's car as he attempts to turn onto the George Washington Memorial Parkway from Belle View Boulevard in Alexandria.[20]
May
- May 23 – James and Marguerite Mott are denied access to Lake Fairfax because they are black.[21]
September
- September 29 – 31-year-old Dwight A. Leicy is fatally injured when his car is broadsided by one driven by 31-year-old Charles A. Lipscomb as he waits at a stop sign on Pohick Road at its intersection with Route 1 in Lorton. Leicy is taken to DeWitt Army Hospital on Fort Belvoir, where he dies of his injuries early the next morning.[22][23]
October
- October 1 – Vernon L. Jones becomes chief of the Vienna Police Department following the retirement of James B. Pruitt.[24]
December
- December 10 – 22-year-old Carl D. Arms unintentionally kills himself in Centreville when he loses control of the car he is driving and crashes near the intersections of Lee Highway and Stringfellow Road. Arms is taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[25]
- December 13 – 2½-year-old Christopher Cantwell is beaten to death by his father, Army Sergeant Patrick Cantwell, in the family home at 4270 Allison Circle in Fairfax.[26][27]
- December 31 – 26-year-old Marie Louise Thiemann is fatally injured when 56-year-old tow truck driver Corbin T. Baker makes a left turn from the right lane on the northbound side of Shirley Highway in Lorton, striking the car she is riding in. Thiemann is taken to Dewitt Army Hospital on Fort Belvoir, where she dies about five hours later.[28][29]
- December 31 – While exploring a construction site on Forestville Road in McLean, 16-year-old Renah B. Rietzke is mortally injured when he misjudges a jump in the unfinished home and falls 12 feet into the basement. Rietzke is taken to the Arlington Hospital, where he dies about 2:00 a.m. the following morning.[30][31]
