- January 27, 1970 – Five cars of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad's Gulf Coast Special train derail and plunge down a 60-foot embankment about a half-mile west of South Van Dorn Street near Alexandria, killing three women and injuring 51 other passengers.
- January 27, 1971 – 61-year-old Nelson A. Watson shoots his wife Alice in the head, then, after calling police to report his crime, commits suicide with the same shotgun in the basement of his home at 3326 Longbranch Drive in Falls Church.
- January 27, 1971 – George H. Alexander is appointed to the newly-created position of Director of Fire and Rescue Services by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
- January 27, 1972 – 26-year-old police informant William H. Phillips fatally shoots 26-year-old pool hall manager Steven Staton in the face with a 12-gauge shotgun in the Jack & Jill Cue Club in the Willston Shopping Center near the Seven Corners area of Falls Church.
- January 27, 1978 – 25-year-old Mona L. Abney is raped and strangled to death in room 722 at the Tysons Corner Holiday Inn by her husband, Wilbert Abney, Jr..
- January 27, 1980 – 19-year-old Armando de Moya is killed in a single car crash when his car skids and crashes into a light pole on Lee Highway in Centreville.
