- January 28, 1979 – 42-year-old Christopher Buckingham commits suicide after barricading himself in his Springfield home.
- January 28, 1980 – 29-year-old Barbara M. Ardis is appointed to the bench of the Fairfax County General District Court, becoming that court's first full-time female judge.
