- September 17, 1980 – 44-year-old Marvin W. Humphreys fatally shoots his 42-year-old wife Lynda, then commits suicide in his home in the Lake Barcroft neighborhood of Falls Church.
- September 17, 1990 – 25-year-old Robert A. Miller beats and stomps 8-year-old Destiny Souza to death in the basement of her family's Springfield townhouse.
- September 17, 1997 – Former Fairfax County police officer Jeffrey R. Hand pleads guilty before Judge Jane Marum Roush in Fairfax Circuit Court to robbing two Fairfax County branches of the Central Fidelity Bank in February and May.
- September 17, 1997 – 2-year-old Nathan Garfield falls into a two-foot deep hole that had been dug for construction of a deck at his family's house at 6614 Oak Rock Court in Centreville and drowns in the six inches of water that had accumulated there.
