- September 16, 1966 – Circuit Court Judge Barnard F. Jennings sentences 37-year-old Herbert H. Steele to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting his ex-wife Pattie at her Falls Church home on February 15.
- September 16, 1973 – 40-year-old Paul H. Rawley is found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home at 11304 Seneca Circle in Herndon.
- September 16, 1983 – Governor Charles S. Robb appoints Alexandria attorney Jack B. Stevens to replace the retiring Judge Burch Millsap on the bench of the Fairfax Circuit Court.
- September 16, 1988 – 30-year-old Ellwood Smale shoots his estranged wife Shari to death, then commits suicide in her apartment in the Bent Tree Apartments in Centreville. Their corpses are discovered on September 19, along with their 17-month-old son Eric, who had entertained himself by crawling around the decomposing bodies of his dead parents and was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed.
- September 16, 2000 – 21-year-old Jemmy E. Valladares Rivas is strangled to death by her boyfriend, 20-year-old Edwin J. Jones, in room #317 at the Courtyard by Marriot hotel on Route 50 in Fairfax.
