Thomas P. Chapman, Jr.

Thomas Putnam Chapman, Jr. (1903 - March 17, 1984) was the Clerk of the Fairfax Circuit Court from 1945 to 1967.[1]

Chapman was the son of Thomas P. Chapman and Estelle Inzer Chapman.[2]

Chapman graduated from the College of William & Mary in 1925.[1] In addition to his role as clerk, Chapman served as the principal of Fairfax Elementary School.[1]

Chapman joined the Circuit Court when he was appointed chief deputy clerk in 1936.[1][3] Chapman was appointed as the clerk of the court by Judge Paul E. Brown in 1945, following the death of John M. Whalen.[4]

After completing Whalen's term, Chapman, running unopposed, was elected in his own right on November 6, 1951.[5]

Chapman was reelected on November 3, 1959, defeating Republican challenger Robert McMahon.[6]

Chapman announced on January 18, 1967 that he would not seek another term as clerk, choosing instead to retire.[7]

Chapman died in the Fairfax Hospital after a stroke, and is buried in the Fairfax City Cemetery.[1]
