Wilbert T. Woodson

Wilbert Tucker "W.T." Woodson (November 12, 1893 – July 12, 1983) was the superintendent of the Fairfax County Public Schools system from 1929 to 1961.

Early life and education

Born and raised in Crozet, Virginia, Woodson graduated from the College of William and Mary in June 1914 with a teacher's diploma.[1] He then did additional work to gain a B.A. in major school administration in 1916.[1]

Career

After receiving his B.A., Woodson became a principal in Nansemond County, Virginia.[2]

He served 11 months in the U.S. Army during World War I, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class and receiving the French Medal of Honor.[1][2] Following the war, Woodson taught history and was the dean at Fork Union Military College from 1919 to 1925.[1][2]

In 1925, Woodson joined the Fairfax County Public Schools system as clerk to the school board.[1]

Woodson was elected as superintendent of the FCPS on March 5, 1929.[1]

Woodson's retirement as superintendent, effective June 1961, was announced at the school board meeting of November 1, 1960.[3]

Personal

Woodson married the former Lucille Olivia Snead and the couple would have three children; sons James Overton and Wilbert Tucker, Jr. and daughter Jean.[4]
