- January 5 – Circuit Court Judge Bruce D. White sentences Carmela dela Rosa to 35 years in prison for murdering her 2½-year-old granddaughter, Angelyn Ogdoc, by dropping her from a 44-foot-high walkway in a parking garage at the Tysons Corner Center on November 29, 2010.[1]
- January 15 – 22-year-old Ryah Leslie is murdered by her roommate, 22-year-old Benjamin Walker, in their shared condo at 5923 Gunther Court in Centreville.[2]
- January 28 – First Lieutenant William Jacoby becomes the Assistant Commander of the Franconia District Station of the Fairfax County Police Department.[3]
