January
- January 1 – Two non-profit legal aid organizations, Legal Services of Northern Virginia and the Potomac Legal Aid Society, combine operations.[1]
- January 18 – A small meteorite crashes through the roof of the Williamsburg Square Family Practice in Lorton, landing in examination room number 2.[2]
February
- February 15 - 37-year-old Nathan N. Smiler is shot in the head by his girlfriend, 31-year-old Caralee Cottle, in the basement bedroom of his house at 8317 Little River Turnpike in Annandale.[3][4]
- February 20 - 52-year-old Chin Ho Wang dies in the fire he intentionally sets in his Alexandria house at 3702 Paul Street.[5]
March
- March 19 – 16-year-old Lorton teenager Christian Perez is beaten to death in the Woodlawn Park in Mount Vernon by Mario Reyes and Francisco Gonzalez Sanchez, two teenaged members of the rival MS-13 youth organization.[6][7][8]
April
- April 12 – 60-year-old Wayne L. Woodyard shoots his 52-year-old wife Jill to death, then commits suicide at their home at 6050 Raina Drive in Centreville.[9][10]
May
- May 3 – 48-year-old Rebecca B. Smith commits suicide at the communty pool in the Franklin Glen neighborhood in Fairfax.[11]
- May 17 – 39-year-old Manassas handyman Jose Ramiro Rosales Cardona is shot to death in a failed home invasion robbery at the house where he was working at 14421 Compton Road in Centreville.[12][13]
- May 21 – 18-year-old Fairfax High School student Abdel O. Chadli is killed by 32-year-old Gary A. Thorne when Thorne strikes Chadli with his 2001 Dodge Durango SUV near the intersection of Lee Highway and Forum Drive in Fairfax. Thorne is also killed at the scene.[14][15]
June
- June 4 – Evan Gargiulo is sentenced to 15 years in prison by Judge Bruce D. White for the November 2, 2008 murder of Mazhar Nazir.[16]
- June 13 – 49-year-old Kenston K. Yi fatally strangles his 15-year-old daughter Joy, then beats his 47-year-old wife Hannah to death in the family's rented condo at 9238 Cardinal Forest Lane in the Gunston Corner neighborhood of Lorton.[17][18][19]
- June 27 – 19-year-old Vanessa V. Pham is found stabbed to death in her 2008 Scion tC hatchback in Fairfax.[20]
July
- July 12 – The skeletal remains of Manuel Mireles-Garcia are discovered in the 10200 block of Furnace Road. Mireles-Garcia had disappeared in Prince William County on May 10 along with his brother, Alberto, whose remains were found on March 15, 2011.[21][22]
- July 14 – Jose L. Cruz is found guilty of stabbing his 57-year-old wife Matilde to death at the family home at 6508 Pinecrest Court in Annandale on December 20, 2007.[23]
- July 26 – Herbert M. Price, Jr. pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter for fatally shaking his 9-month-old son Dylan on September 22, 2009.[24]
August
- August 20 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Dennis J. Smith sentences Maria De Las Mercedes Tizon to 14 years in prison for murdering her 34-year-old boyfriend Ahmed Chouaib in her Centreville apartment on August 15, 2009.[25]
- August 24 – 17-year-old Gregory J. Malsam is electrocuted in Fairfax when a branch from the tree he is trimming strikes a high-voltage power line.[26][27]
September
- September 12 – 48-year-old Springfield resident Stephen A. Carr is shot to death at his home at 6810 Field Master Drive in the Orange Hunt neighborhood of Springfield by David A. Patton.[28][29]
- September 22 – A fire in a townhome at 9639 Hagel Circle in Lorton kills 24-year-old Elieen Cecilia Langham-Anderson and two of her sons, 5-year-old Soloman and 3-year-old Alfonso.[30]
- September 24 – 30-year-old Herbert M. Price Jr. is sentenced to eight years in prison by Fairfax Circuit Court Judge R. Terrence Ney for fatally shaking his 9-month-old son Dylan in his Burke home on September 22, 2009.[31]
- September 30 – Heavy rains cause the dam in the Kingstowne Park to fail, draining two of the five ponds in the park.[32]
October
- October 7 – 61-year-old Yong Suk Yun is stabbed to death in his house at 5781 Ladues End Court in Fairfax.[33][34]
- October 14 – 18-year-old Wyatt J. Campbell brings a golf club to a knife fight behind the Rose Hill Plaza in Alexandria and is fatally stabbed by 15-year-old Steven Smith. Campbell is driven to the Inova Healthplex in Franconia, where he dies.[35]
- October 22 – 44-year-old Kathleen Tran is shot to death by her husband, 43-year-old Tony Tong, in her bedroom in the family home at 13854 Rembrandt Way in the Chantilly Green Estates neighborhood of Chantilly.[36]
- October 25 – Lee T. Wiggins is sentenced to 40 years in prison by Judge David S. Schell for killing his girlfriend, Siobhan L. Russell, on April 12, 2009.[37]
- October 27 – 20-year-old Breauna Woolen is killed when her mother, 37-year-old Ashante Townes, loses control of the SUV she is driving and rolls the vehicle on Interstate 95 in Springfield. Woolen is thrown from the SUV and is killed instantly.[38][39]
November
- November 19 – Ronald Robertson is found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the October, 2009 shooting of Karen S. Deck at his Reston apartment.[40]
- November 29 – 2½-year-old Angelyn Ogdoc is thrown from a walkway at the Tysons Corner Center by her 50-year-old grandmother, Carmela Dela Rosa. The mortally injured toddler is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she dies early the next day.[41]
December
- December 16 – Alfredo R. Prieto is given two death sentences by Judge Randy I. Bellows for the 1988 murders of Rachael Raver and Warren Fulton in Reston.[42]
- December 19 – 19-year-old Jahed A. Babi is found shot to death in the Silas Burke Park near his home in Burke.[43][44]
- December 20 – A new sign identifying the Parklawn neighborhood in Alexandria is dedicated.[45]
- December 27 – 20-year-old Jabrill Y. Mara of Springfield is found mortally wounded from two gunshot wounds on the ramp from Nutley Street to Interstate 66 in Vienna. Mara is taken to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies two days later.[46]
