John P. Shacochis

John Paul Shacochis (May 30, 1915 - February 21, 2004) was the supervisor from the Dranesville District from 1976 to 1980.

Shacochis was born in West Pittson, Pennsylvania.[1] He graduated from Scranton University and began working for the Federal Government in 1940, serving in the Navy during World War II.[1][2] From 1945 to 1953, Shacochis worked for the Veterans Administration in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.[3]

Shacochis and his family moved to the Pimmit Hills neighborhood in June 1953.[4] In September 1957, Shacochis became president of the Pimmit Hills Citizens Association.[4] He later became the president of the West Lewinsville Heights-Rosemont Civic Association.[5]

Unhappy with the Board of Supervisors' rezoning of the Merrywood tract to allow the construction of high-rise apartment buildings, in 1962 Shacochis led a proposal to incorporate the town of Lewinsville, which would have included the area of Tysons Corner.[5]

After retiring from the Navy Department's Bureau of Navy Personnel in 1973, Shacochis was elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors representing the Dranesville District in 1975, defeating Democratic incumbent Rufus Phillips and independent candidate Dale P. Lewis.[1][6]

In November 2003, Shacochis and his wife moved to a nursing home in Wellsley, Massachusetts, and it was there that he died of a stroke.[3] He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Quotes

"I am convinced that the majority of you are drones or laggards who are willing to sit idly by and let a handful of citizens, knock themselves out for your welfare. And as long as things are going smoothly you'll never lift a finger to help." - January, 1960
