Kirk W. Kincannon
Kirk William Kincannon is the director of the Fairfax County Park Authority, a role he has held since January 27, 2014.
Early life and education
Kincannon was born in Falls Church. A Navy brat, his family moved several times before finally returning to the Mount Vernon area when he was in the fourth grade. He graduated from Fort Hunt High School in 1975 and Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk with a bachelor's degree in physical education, leisure services and recreation in 1980.[1]
Career
After college, Kincannon spent a six-month stint starting in October 1980 as a school age child care teacher at Weyanoke Elementary School before joining the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department as a recreation coordinator in March 1981.[1]
Kincannon spent four years with the Town of Herndon before joining the Fairfax County Park Authority in 1985. Over the next three years, he worked as an assistant manager at the Mount Vernon, Lee District, and Providence Recreation Centers before becoming the manager of Lake Accotink Park in 1987.[1]
From 1995 to 2000, Kincannon was as director of parks, recreation and tourism for Wythe County, Virginia.[1]
In 2000, Kincannon joined the City of Alexandria's Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities as a deputy director under Sandra Whitmore.[1]
Whitmore announced her retirement in January 2004, and City of Alexandria Manager Philip Sunderland announced Kincannon's appointment as the director of the city's Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities the following month, with Kincannon assuming the role on March 5.[2][3]
In January 2009, Kincannon became Parks and Recreation Director for the city of Boulder, Colorado.[4]
