- May 5 – The Fairfax County Water Authority's Frederick P. Griffith, Jr., Water Treatment Plant is placed in service.[1]
- May 8 – 18-year-old Michael W. Kennedy goes on a shooting rampage at the Sully District Police Station, killing Fairfax County Police detective Vicky O. Armel and mortally wounding officer Michael E. Garbarino before he himself is fatally shot by officers Mark Dale and Jeffrey Andrea.[2][3]
- May 12 – 57-year-old Pamela A. Jones is stabbed to death by her 24-year-old son, Nathan P. Jones, in the family home at 3232 Sherman Street in the Mosby Woods neighborhood of Fairfax.[4]
- May 17 – Fairfax County Police officer Michael E. Garbarino dies at the Fairfax Hospital of injuries received in the May 8 shooting rampage of Michael W. Kennedy.[5]
- May 24 – 24-year-old Donald L. Caison, Jr. settles a disagreement with 34-year-old William Green by stabbing him to death outside the home of a female acquaintance at 1103 Clarke Street in Herndon.[6][7]
