- August 2, 1904 – 48-year-old Southern Railway Section Boss Allen Payne is killed near Clifton when he steps out of the way of a southbound train and is instead struck by the northbound train, the Number 2 Chesapeake and Ohio.
- August 2, 2014 – While trimming the azalea bushes in front of her home in Annandale, 44-year-old Melodye Creason is stung by a bald-faced hornet and suffers a severe allergic reaction, causing her throat to swell up and prevent her from breathing. Creason is taken to the hospital, but suffers massive brain damage from the lack of air and is removed from life support eight days later. Creason dies on August 13.
