- July 13, 1858 – The Herndon post office is established.
- July 13, 2001 – Edwin J. Jones is sentenced to 20 years in prison by Judge Jonathan C. Thacher for murdering his girlfriend, 21-year-old Jemmy E. Valladares Rivas, at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Fairfax on September 16, 2000 and subsequently stealing her car.
- July 13, 2006 – 45-year-old William H. Lash, III fatally shoots his autistic son, 12-year-old William H. Lash, IV, then commits suicide at his home at 1433 Pathfinder Lane in McLean.
