- October 1, 1908 – 48-year-old Ella A. Hall is killed near her home at Burke's Station when she is struck by a Chesapeake and Ohio train on the nearby Southern Railway tracks.
- October 1, 1944 – Thomas Stottlemeyer and his wife are killed in an early morning fire in their Vienna apartment building.
- October 1, 1956 – 39-year-old Branford Dews fatally shoots his 21-year-old wife Celestine at their cabin in the Merrifield region of Fairfax.
- October 1, 1965 – Vernon L. Jones becomes chief of the Vienna Police Department following the retirement of James B. Pruitt.
- October 1, 1976 – Fairfax Circuit Court Chief Judge Barnard F. Jennings sentences 36-year-old Edward Brown, Jr. to three consecutive life terms in prison for the March 7 shotgun murders of his estranged wife's family: 82-year-old Louis J. Roberts, Sr., his 60-year-old wife Cora, and 32-year-old son Louis, Jr., at their home at 14201 Darkwood Drive in Centreville.
- October 1, 1981 – 62-year-old Morton C. Grossman and his wife, 58-year-old Sylvea, are shot to death in their home at 9015 Edgepark Road in the Wolf Trap Woods neighborhood of Vienna.
- October 1, 1988 – 42-year-old Vernon Fogg is killed when the bed of the dump truck he is driving rises and strikes the Backlick Road overpass on Interstate 95 in Lorton, causing the truck to overturn.
- October 1, 2003 – 20-year-old Joshua P. Cooke is sentenced to 40 years in prison for the shotgun murder of his adoptive parents, Paul and Margaret, on February 17.
- October 1, 2015 – 49-year-old Alfredo R. Prieto is executed by lethal injection at the Greenville Correctional Center in Jarratt for the murders of Rachael A. Raver and Warren H. Fulton, III in Reston in 1988.
