- September 16, 1988 – 30-year-old Ellwood Smale shoots his estranged wife Shari to death, then commits suicide in her apartment in the Bent Tree Apartments in Centreville. Their corpses are discovered on September 19, along with their 17-month-old son Eric, who had entertained himself by crawling around the decomposing bodies of his dead parents and was dehydrated but otherwise unharmed.
- September 19, 1991 – 19-year-old Robert R. Redfearn's second trial for fatally shooting 17-year-old Robin M. Anderson in Alexandria on November 3, 1990 ends in a first-degree murder conviction.
- September 19, 2001 – Fairfax County government computers are struck by the Nimda worm, forcing the shutdown of the county's Web site and dispatch of 150 technicians to clean the county's 9000 computers and 300 servers.
