- January 31 - 55-year-old Kenneth J. Russell is stabbed to death by his roommate, 47-year-old Calvin Johnson, in their shared apartment at 7994 Audubon Avenue, #101, in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria.[1][2]
February
- February 22 – Mark E. Lawlor is convicted of the 2008 murder of Genevieve Orange.[3]
- February 24 – 55-year-old Danny R. Sullivan is killed near the entrance of the Bailey's Crossroads Shopping Center in Falls Church when he falls into the path of a 1999 Ford box truck and is struck.[4]
- February 25 – 17-year-old Mario Reyes is sentenced to 28 years in prison by Judge Brett A. Kassabian for beating Christian Perez to death with a baseball bat in the Woodlawn Park in Mount Vernon on March 19, 2010.[5]
March
- March 2 – 42-year-old Sow-Hoong Hon is killed when she runs a stop sign on Bellview Road at Old Dominion Drive in McLean and her 1999 Honda Accord is T-boned by a 50-year-old woman in a 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser.[6][7]
- March 5 – 46-year-old Kevin E. Eversburg is struck by a train and killed in Lorton.[8][9][10]
- March 15 – A man walking on Furnace Road between Old Colchester Road and Richmond Highway in Lorton finds the partial skeleton of Alberto de Jesus Mireles-Garcia close to the railroad trestle.[11][12]
April
- April 11 – The Congressional Bank at 1800 Michael Faraday Drive in Reston is robbed by Edward M. Andrews.[13]
- April 13 – 44-year-old Annandale man Hung T. Nguyen opens fire in the Belle View Barber Shop in Alexandria, killing 39-year-old Le D. Hoang and wounding another man. Nguyen surrenders to the Fairfax County Police the next day.[14]
- April 22 – After slashing another man with a knife, Joseph A. Croft is shot to death by a Fairfax County Police officer in Springfield.[15]
- April 24 – 24-year-old Arturo C. Zaldivar unintentionally kills himself when he crashes his 1988 Oldsmobile Bravada into the backyard of a home in the 13100 block of Lou Alice Way in Herndon.[16]
May
- May 6 – The Wachovia Bank at 1311 Dolley Madison Boulevard in McLean is robbed.[17][13]
- May 13 – Edward M. Andrews robs the Cardinal Bank at 11150 Sunset Hills Road in Reston. During the robbery, Edwards vaults the teller counter and pistol whips a 54-year-old clerk.[17][13]
- May 19 – Edward M. Andrews robs the United Bank at 2071 Chain Bridge Road in Vienna.[17][13]
- May 23 – 23-year-old Marvin Jimenez Centellas is killed when he crashes his SUV at the intersection of Pickett Road and Colonial Avenue in the City of Fairfax and is thrown from the vehicle.[18]
- May 27 – 18-year-old Gbassay Koroma settles an argument with his father, 40-year-old Francis Koroma, by stabbing him at their apartment at 5108 Woodmere Drive, #102 in Centreville. The elder Koroma is taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he dies the next day.[19][20]
June
- June 3 – Caralee Cottle is sentenced to 3½ years in prison by Judge Michael F. Devine for fatally shooting her boyfriend, Nathan N. Smiler, on February 15, 2010.[21]
- June 6 – 49-year-old Mi Hwa Kim is stabbed to death at 13836 Braddock Springs Road in Centreville by Man Ha Park.[22]
July
- July 4 – Lawrence G. Emmer is stabbed to death in his Great Falls home at 1223 Colvin Meadows Lane by his son, Casey.[23]
- July 9 – Following a two year long renovation and expansion project, the Dolley Madison Library in McLean reopens.[24]
- July 19 – Gary P. Hanson is shot to death by his son, Richard, in the elder Hanson's Springfield home.[25]
- July 21 – Refusing police commands to drop the shotgun he is carrying, 34-year-old Ricardo Leon is shot to death by Fairfax County Police officers in front of his townhouse at 6165 Kendra Way in Centreville.[26][27]
- July 22 – 62-year-old Vienna woman Barbara Newman stops by Dr. Mark A. Lawrence's home and office at 8612 Tebbs Lane in McLean and shoots the 71-year-old psychiatrist to death before committing suicide.[28]
- July 28 – Following allegations of visa fraud, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies raid the offices of the University of Northern Virginia in Annandale.[29]
August
- August 10 – 39-year-old James A. Cetto II kills himself, his 41-year-old passenger, and 52-year-old Katherine F. Miller when he loses control of his 1993 Toyota pickup truck and crashes into several other cars on Backlick Road in Springfield.[30]
- August 19 – Fairfax County Circuit Judge R. Terrence Ney sentences David A. Patton to 50 years in prison for the murder of Stephen A. Carr in Carr's Springfield home on September 12, 2010.[31]
- August 23 – Fairfax County is shaken by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake originating in Mineral, Virginia.[32]
- August 23 – 53-year-old Dr. Tam-Anh Chu of Great Falls is killed in Fairfax when he loses control of his 1996 Toyota sedan and crashes into a tree near the intersection of Braddock and Burke Station roads.[33]
September
- September 8 – The remains of tropical storm Lee dump up to 12 inches of rain on Fairfax County, causing the drowning deaths of 12-year-old Jack Donaldson in Vienna, 25-year-old Galo Sebastian Salvador Vinueza in Lorton, and 67-year-old Arsalan Hakimi in Great Falls.[34][35]
- September 10 – 40-year-old construction worker Edgar Tobar is killed in Annandale when he is run over by an asphalt roller.[36][37]
- September 18 – 1-year-old infant Wreef Wafy Almutiri drowns in a bathtub at the Westin Reston Heights hotel in Reston, where his parents are staying.[38][39]
October
- October 5 – 20-year-old Carol N. Lutsky beats and mortally injures her girlfriend's son, 11-month-old Nehemiah Williams, in her home in Vienna.[40][41] Nehemiah is taken to the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he dies the next day.[40]
- October 6 – 50-year-old Carmela Dela Rosa is convicted of first-degree murder in the November 29, 2010 slaying of her 2½-year-old granddaughter, Angelyn Ogdoc, whom she threw from a 44-foot high walkway at Tysons Corner Center.[42]
- October 14 – The Colonel William L. Durrer Police Forensic Facility, named for the former Chief of Police, is dedicated at the McConnell Public Safety and Transportation Operations Center in Fairfax. The dedication is attended by Col. Durrer, his wife Ayleen, Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Sharon Bulova, and current Fairfax County Police Chief Colonel David M. Rohrer.
November
- November 1 – After 12 years of service, Colonel Toussaint E. Summers, Jr. retires as chief of the Herndon Police Department.[43]
- November 4 – Judge David S. Schell sentences Kenston K. Yi to 40 years in prison for the murder of his wife Hannah and daughter Joy at their rented condominium at 9238 Cardinal Forest Lane in Lorton on June 13, 2010.[44]
- November 8 – 32-year-old Darren F. Morrell is killed in Oakton when he runs his 2005 Honda CBR motorcycle into a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by an 85-year-old man who turns unexpectedly in front of Morrell.[45]
- November 10 – Fairfax County Executive Anthony H. Griffin announces that he will retire in April, 2012.[46]
- November 12 – 26-year-old Will Alberto Machado Avelar kills himself and mortally injures his passenger, 36-year-old Oscar Rodriguez Costanza, when he loses control of his 2001 Nissan and strikes a tree on Dranesville Road and Park Avenue in Herndon. Rodriguez is taken to Fairfax Hospital, where he dies of his injuries.[47]
- November 21 – The BB&T bank in the Village Shops at Crosspointe shopping center in Fairfax Station is robbed by Jeffrey B. Koch.[48][49]
- November 28 – 36-year-old Edin Javier Carranza Cruz is electrocuted in Centreville when he inadvertently strikes overhead power lines while moving a ladder.[50]
December
- December 5 – Following a minor traffic accident, 59-year-old Kil Sun Flom is hit by a pumper truck and killed in Tysons Corner.[51]
- December 12 – 34-year-old Colvin N. Morris is shot to death in Reston.[52]
- December 17 – 22-year-old Michael J. Henley is struck by two SUVs and mortally wounded in Fairfax Station. He is taken to a local hospital, where he is pronounced dead.[53]
