Madeira School

The Madeira School is a private high school for girls in McLean.

The school was originally established as the Madeira School for Girls by Lucy Madeira (later Lucy Madeira Wing) in Washington, D.C. in 1906.[1] In 1929, the school was incorporated as The Madeira School, and in 1931 the school moved to McLean.[1]

On January 30, 1957, Wing resigned as headmistress of the school she had led for over 50 years, and Allegra Maynard became the new headmistress.[2]

On November 4, 1957, the groundbreaking ceremony for the school's new library, made possible by a $100,000 donation from Queene Ferry Coonley, a fellow alumna of Wing from Vassar College.[3]

Shortly after her 65th birthday, Maynard retired from Madeira in June of 1962 and Marian W. Smith took the position.[4]

Smith only lasted two years in her new position, and Maynard was called back from her retirement to serve as headmistress from 1964 to 1965.
