- August 20, 1982 – Anthony Horton, a 20-year-old Baltimore man, is sentenced to life in prison by Judge Barbara Keenan for the April 28 murder of Stanley Weinstein during a gas station robbery in Springfield. His two accomplices, 24-year-old James Swinson and 18-year-old Jerry Prince, are each given 25-year prison terms for their participation.
- August 20, 2010 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Dennis J. Smith sentences Maria De Las Mercedes Tizon to 14 years in prison for murdering her 34-year-old boyfriend Ahmed Chouaib in her Centreville apartment on August 15, 2009.
- August 20, 2013 – A worker for the Tysons Service Corporation is killed when he falls into a 15-foot-deep hole, which then collapses, at 1050 Kinglet Court in McLean
