January
- January 21 – While standing outside the apartment building at 5600 Bismach drive in Alexandria with two other teenagers, 15-year-old Annandale High School sophomore Anthony Campos is mortally wounded when two members of the Mara Salvatrucha youth organization walk up and shoot them. All three are taken to the Fairfax Hospital, where Campos is pronounced dead.[1]
February
- February 4 – 26-year-old Oscar Omar Ramos Hernandez is sentenced to three consecutive life terms by Judge Kathleen H. MacKay for the August 13, 2001 rape and murder of Diana Garcia in Falls Church.[2]
March
- March 6 – 20-year-old Brendan H. Tash is shot to death at a party at 6210 Cardinal Brook Court in Springfield when 19-year-old uninvited guest Durrell M. Pretty is asked to leave and decides to break up the party by firing a handgun into a crowd of partygoers.[3]
- March 24 – 52-year-old Kiran V. Kadian is stabbed to death in her Great Falls home by her 20-year-old son, Jayant Kadian.[4]
May
- May 14 – Children playing with matches start a fire at 3710 North Rosser Street in the Westbriar Condominiums in Baileys Crossroads, killing 46-year-old Ross Porro and her mother, 87-year-old Estafia.[5]
June
- June 11 – 46-year-old Richard B. Gluckstern is strangled to death in his home at 12110 Elm Forest way in the Fair Lakes neighborhood of Fairfax by Jason E. Lee.[6]
- June 25 – 22-year-old Jack S. Cornejo is shot to death by Brandon P. Gotwalt in a courtyard of the Fair Oaks at Pender Creek apartments in Fairfax.[7][8][9][10]
July
- July 8 – After 10 months in the position, Joanmarie I. Davoli resigns as the head of the Fairfax public defender's office, citing inadequate resources from the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission.[11]
- July 27 – Following a contempt of cop incident, Fairfax County Police Lieutenant Lance E. Schaible uses the "touch a cop, go to jail" gambit as an excuse to arrest Fairfax County Planning Commisioner Ronald W. Koch at the Sully District Station.[12]
August
- August 4 – 24-year-old Jamel D. Rush stabs 30-year-old Christian A. Green to death near Green's home on Hagel Circle in Lorton when Green intervenes in an argument between Rush and a young woman.[13]
- August 15 – The burned body of Hak Bong Kim, a 55-year-old carpenter from Burke, is found in a wooded area near the Saint Michael Catholic Church in Annandale.[14]
- August 25 – 20-year-old Brendan Klos fatally shoots his frenemy, 20-year-old Anthony Sherbaf, in the face with a .22 caliber pistol in the home at 6107 Beech Tree Drive in the Wilton Woods neighborhood of Alexandria.[15][16]
- August 29 – 46-year-old Dana E. Moro beats 45-year-old Alexandria attorney Eric N. Miller to death at the Alexandria Motel.[17][18]
September
- September 23 – Nelson Noe Moreno is convicted of first-degree murder for stabbing his girlfriend, 27-year-old Maria J. Alvarenga, to death in her home in Alexandria on November 18, 2004.[19]
- September 23 – 31-year-old Judy J. Coate is raped, beaten and stabbed to death by 40-year-old Matthew M. Dowdy in Falls Church.[20][21]
- September 26 – The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors votes to grant a non-exclusive 15-year franchise to Verizon Communications to sell cable television service in the county.[22]
October
- October 2 – 48-year-old investment adviser and radio host Rick Malone dies in a fall at his home at 6319 Cavalier Corridor in the Lake Barcroft neighborhood of Falls Church.[23]
- October 21 – 19-year-old Durrell M. Pretty is sentenced to 13 years in prison by Judge Jane Marum Roush for the fatal shooting of Brendan H. Tash on March 6.[24]
- October 29 – A failed suicide by cop attempt by 56-year-old Joseph D. Oliver at the Archstone Sussex Commons apartment complex in Kingstowne ends when Oliver shoots and gravely injures Fairfax County Police officer Pete Feigleson and nearly hits officer Scott McKaskill. Police return fire, seriously injuring Oliver.[25]
November
- November 3 – Anthony L. Burdis fatally shoots and stabs 53-year-old John M. Shirley at his girlfriend's condominium at 12731 Fair Crest Court in Fairfax.[26][27][28]
- November 10 – 49-year-old Samuel K. Hamlett fatally stabs 41-year-old Lynda A. Meagher to death in his ex-wife Betty L. Talbott's Alexandria apartment at 8436 Graves St #102 to settle an argument.[29][30]
- November 24 – 18-year-old J. Tyler Bentley is killed when the 1993 Honda Accord in which he is a passenger is hit by a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by drunk driver Pablo A. Cruz at the intersection of Arlington Boulevard and Annandale Road in Falls Church.[31][32]
- November 26 – An early morning fire in a garage at 3423 Charles Street in Falls Church kills a man.[33]
December
- December 8 – Darius T. Hicks is sentenced to life in prison for murdering Shawndre N. Fulton.[34]
- December 14 – 28-year-old restaurant manager John M. Serumgard unintentionally kills himself in an early morning crash on Leesburg Pike in Falls Church when he loses control of the 2000 Ford Focus he is driving and strikes a tree, a light pole, and another tree.[35]
- December 14 – The Herndon Official Worker Center opens amidst protests in Herndon.[36]
- December 15 – 32-year-old Jairo F. Hernandez, his 3-year-old daughter Casandra, and her 6-year-old sister Maria Isabel Cruz die in a fire in the townhouse at 8064 Saint Annes Court in Alexandria.[37]
- December 16 – 27-year-old Alirio Reyes is sentenced to life in prison by Federal judge T. S. Ellis, III for murdering 17-year-old Jose Sandoval on May 16, 2004.[38]
- December 25 – Nathan Cheatham shoots his mother Sheila to death at their shared home in McLean, then drives to Great Falls, where he shoots Adam S. Price, Janina C. Price, and Christopher J. Buro before committing suicide.[39][40]
