- January 11, 1947 – 18-year-old Elizabeth Breeden is killed and 6 others are injured when the Tennessean passenger train derails in Burke.
- January 11, 2008 – 51-year-old police snitch Brent U. Shorter is fatally shot by a Fairfax County Police officer behind a restaurant in the Rose Hill Shopping Center in the Franconia area of Alexandria when he refuses repeated commands to drop the knife he is waving around. Shorter is taken to the Inova HealthPlex, where he is pronounced dead.
