- January 4, 1954 – The Thomas Jefferson Library opens in a small room behind a barber shop in the Graham Road Shopping Center.
- January 4, 1961 – 31-year-old Henrietta E. Heinz is struck and killed by 28-year-old Harold L. Diffenderfer as she crosses Route 1 in Alexandria. Diffenderfer was drunk and fled the scene, but was eventually arrested and charged.
- January 4, 1970 – 54-year-old Walena Pawley is burned to death in a fire at her home at 7625 Trammell Road in Annandale.
- January 4, 1974 – The body of 19-year-old Walter C. Moore, Jr., of Norristown, Pennsylvania, is found on the shoulder of the Shirley Highway near Backlick Road in Springfield. Fairfax County medical examiner Claude E. Cooper determines that Moore died of a shotgun blast to his chest.
- January 4, 1998 – 5-month old Trevon Taylor dies of starvation in Falls Church.
- January 4, 2000 – Kennell Alexander pleads guilty to second-degree murder and unlawful wounding in Fairfax County Circuit Court for shooting 23-year-old Alvin May to death and wounding another man at the Cedar Ridge Apartments in Reston on February 13, 1999.
- January 4, 2006 – 5-day-old Crissmis N. R. Jones is shaken to death by her drunken 38-year-old grandmother, Heather T. Thomas, in Thomas' apartment at at 14822 Millicent Court in the London Towne neighborhood of Centreville.
