- January 5, 1968 – 26-year-old Greta Lee Sprinkle is sentenced to 10 years in prison by Judge Barnard F. Jennings for the murder of her husband Billy in the couple's home at 7117 Byrneley Lane in Annandale on January 12, 1966.
- January 5, 1973 – Fairfax Circuit Court Judge Percy Thornton orders 18-year-old Mark W. Tucker begin serving his five-year sentence for manslaughter for fatally shooting his mother Mary at the family home in Fairfax on July 9, 1970.
- January 5, 1982 – 33-year-old Nicholas E. Tomlin is shot to death in the Jefferson Manor neighborhood of Alexandria.
- January 5, 2007 – Jayant Kadian is sentenced to 20 years in prison by Circuit Court Judge Kathleen H. MacKay for the murder of his mother, Kiran V. Kadian, in Great Falls in March 2005.
- January 5, 2012 – Circuit Court Judge Bruce D. White sentences Carmela dela Rosa to 35 years in prison for murdering her 2½-year-old granddaughter, Angelyn Ogdoc, by dropping her from a 44-foot-high walkway in a parking garage at the Tysons Corner Center on November 29, 2010.
