- October 17, 1977 – Montie R. Rissell is sentenced to life in prison for murdering Ursula M. Miltenberger in Burke on March 6.
- October 17, 1987 – The Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, housed in a replica of the original station, is dedicated in Fairfax Station.
- October 17, 1996 – After robbing the Riggs Bank in the Tysons Corner Center, 31-year-old Tariq M. Khan gets into a gunfight with Fairfax County Police Officer Troy S. Payne, Jr. and is shot to death.
- October 17, 2007 – Kevin C. Kline pistol whips and then shoots 80-year-old Joan M. Gillinson in the face as she sits on a bench in the Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria. Kline flees the scene when he is discovered by a passerby concealing Gillinson's body beneath some leaves and boards a Fairfax Connector bus on nearby Route 1, leading to a four-hour standoff before he finally surrenders and is arrested.
- October 17, 2014 – The renovated Springfield Town Center opens in Springfield.
