- October 12, 1970 – 18-year-old William G. Psimas shoots and mortally wounds 13-year-old newspaper carrier Todd K. McKinney outside Psimas' home at 5000 Kingston Drive in Annandale when Psimas mistakes McKinney for a prowler tampering with his 1963 Mercury Comet. The injured McKinney collapses in the driveway of nearby 4920 Kingston Drive and dies of his wounds.
- October 12, 1987 – Jermaine James and Amanda L. Croson, both six years old, die in a fire in a third floor unit at 11633 Stoneview Square in the Shadowood Condominiums in Reston.
- October 12, 1994 – 23-year-old Joseph A. Robles, a retail distributor of recreational agricultural products and pharmaceuticals, is shot and mortally wounded by Lamore S. Rowe during a botched robbery at his house at 7208 Neuman Street in Springfield. Robles lives for six weeks before dying of complications from his injuries on November 25.
- October 12, 1998 – In a 9-1 vote, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approves a revitalization plan for five areas in the county: the Route 1 corridor in Alexandria, the Baileys Crossroads and Seven Corners areas of Falls Church, McLean, Annandale, and Springfield.
