January
- January 1 – Former Henrico County Executive Carlton C. Massey is chosen as the first Fairfax County Executive by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.[1]
- January 15 – 19-year-old Ethel M. Jennings beats her 4-month-old baby daughter Ethel Marie to death in the family's converted chicken coop home on Route 7 in Alexandria.[2][3][4]
- January 17 – 32-year-old Benjamin H. Turner shoots his 52-year-old uncle William to death in the elder man's Herndon home.[5][6]
- January 31 – 34-year-old Rupert J. Turbeville is sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of Ella F. Moody in Alexandria on August 29, 1951.[7][8]
February
- February 26 – Fairfax County Police officers David R. Eike and James Murphy discover Army Major Grady W. Phillips fellating drunken Marine Corporal William C. Ellicott in Major Phillips' car on the side of Route 236 in Lincolnia. The officers arrest both men, and Major Phillips later claims at his court martial that he was attempting to retrieve his eyeglasses, which had fallen on the floor of the car, although this explanation did not seem to adequately address why Corporal Ellicott was discovered with his pants off and his underwear pulled down.[9]
April
- April 17 – 80-year-old Abraham F. Hunsberger is mortally injured when he turns his car into the path of a dump truck driven by 43-year-old Egbert O. Compton at the intersections of routes 123 and 645 in Fairfax Station. Hunsberger is taken to Arlington Hospital, where he dies about an hour later.[10]
May
- May 2 – 20-year-old Stonewall Furr is fatally shot by a guard as he attempts his third escape from Camp 30 in Fairfax. Furr dies in the ambulance taking him to the Arlington Hospital.[11]
October
- October 26 – A large forest fire in the Groveton area requires the efforts of 300 firefighters and 30 pieces of equipment from various area departments to bring the fire under control.[12]
- October 29 – 27-year-old George W. Porter shoots and fatally wounds his 25-year-old common law wife Faye at the couple's Baileys Crossroads home. Faye is taken to the Alexandria Hospital, where she dies on November 7.[13][14][15]
- October 31 – 26-year-old security guard John N. Iorizzo fatally shoots 17-year-old Fairfax High School football player Howard A. Strang when Iorizzo catches Strang and several other youths vandalizing property at Lake Barcroft in Falls Church.[16]
November
- November 23 22-year-old Army Private Pauline E. Delesky is mortally injured when 25-year-old PFC Leo R. Jensen loses control of the car he is driving and crashes on Columbia Pike near Baileys Crossroads. Both Delesky and Jensen are thrown from the rolling car; Jensen suffering back injuries and Delesky a fractured skull. Delesky dies in the Fort Belvoir Hospital on November 30 without regaining consciousness.[17][18][19]
- November 30 – 47-year-old Lydia Morris is killed when she loses control of the car she is driving and crashes on icy Ox Road in Fairfax Station. Morris is crushed when she is thrown from the car, which then rolls on top of her.[20]
December
- December 7 – The First Christian Church of Falls Church holds its first Sunday service at the Walter Reed Elementary School in Arlington.[21][22]
