- October 20, 1960 – The Springfield Plaza shopping center opens in Springfield.
- October 20, 1969 – Following a petition drive by the Better Transit Now Committee, the AB&W Transit Company begins offering local bus service between Springfield and the Bradlick and Landmark Shopping Centers.
- October 20, 1985 – 16-year-old Thomas L. Grogg shoots 28-year-old laborer Hallie Hollis nine times in the head with a .22 caliber pistol in the parking lot of the Vulcan Materials Company at 10000 Ox Road in Lorton, making Hollis the second homicide of the year in the county.
- October 20, 1989 – A trash fire forces the evacuation of thousands of people from Springfield Mall in Springfield.
- October 20, 1997 – 49-year-old Sheryl W. Czepluch, a librarian at Dranesville Elementary School, is killed when a deer struck by another car crashes through the windshield of her Volvo as she drives along Old Dominion Drive in McLean.
- October 20, 2000 – Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Michael P. McWeeny sentences 62-year-old Issa E. Mansour to life in prison for murdering his brother-in-law, 56-year-old Christian B. Hughes, at Hughes' Franconia home on November 11, 1999.
- October 20, 2012 – 56-year-old Magid H. Momenian unintentionally kills himself when the tree he is trying to cut down in the back yard of his house at 902 McMillen Court in Great Falls falls on him.
