- January 31, 1970 – 12-year-old Perry Ritter drowns in the indoor swimming pool at the Dyer family home at 905 Frome Lane in McLean.
- January 31, 1978 – 45-year-old gas station owner George H. Scarborough is shot to death at his townhouse apartment at 6541 Yadkin Court in Alexandria by James T. Clark, Jr. and Charles D. Stewart in a murder-for-hire plot masterminded by Scarborough's 44-year-old estranged wife Jamie.
- January 31, 1980 – 16-year-old Lawrence Fine is shot in the head and killed by a friend playing with a rifle in a townhouse on Headlands Circle in Reston.
- January 31, 2011 – 55-year-old Kenneth J. Russell is stabbed to death by his roommate, 47-year-old Calvin Johnson, in their shared apartment at 7994 Audubon Avenue, #101, in the Hybla Valley area of Alexandria.
