- January 8, 1960 – 57-year-old house painter Doss Wyley dies in a fire when his house trailer in Burke burns.
- January 8, 1968 – 2½-year-old Allegra Shuldiner falls through the ice covering Lake Anne and drowns in Reston.
- January 8, 1981 – 30-year-old John H. Wright is convicted of murder for the fatal shootings of 29-year-old Gary Cook and 54-year-old Grover Glass in the Nightingale Trailer Park in Alexandria on July 8, 1980.
- January 8, 1986 – Harris N. Miller is elected chairman of the Democratic Party in Fairfax County.
- January 8, 1999 – Circuit Court Judge Robert W. Wooldridge, Jr. sentences Troy A. Demar to 40 years in prison for stabbing his 23-year-old girlfriend Christine Allen to death in her Alexandria apartment on February 28, 1998.
- January 8, 2017 – 15-year-old Damaris A. Reyes Rivas is stabbed to death in Springfield by 17-year-old Venus Romero Iraheta at the instigation of 17-year-old Jose Cerrato, a member of the MS-13 youth organization. Reyes Rivas was killed for her role in luring 21-year-old Christian Sosa Rivas to his murder in Prince William County the previous month.
