- October 23, 1934 – A fire at their Franconia home kills 40-year-old Nellie Wise and her daughters, 19-year-old Beatrice and 12-year-old Frances. Fortunately, 43-year-old Philip J. Wise had had the forethought to insure the lives of his wife and daughters for a total of $1300 before the tragedy.
- October 23, 1975 – 47-year-old Nancy A. Rockcastle unintentionally turns her own suicide into a familicide when she uses the family's Mercedes-Benz to asphyxiate herself in the garage of the family's rented home at 1433 Hardy Court in McLean. The running engine of the car fills not only the garage but the house with carbon monoxide, which kills her 49-year-old husband Charles and 6-year-old son Matthew and fatally injures her 13-year-old son Andrew.
- October 23, 1978 – Upon being told by Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Vice Chairman Martha V. Pennino that the BoS intends to ask him to resign, Fairfax County Executive Leonard L. Whorton submits his resignation. Whorton's resignation is accepted by a 7-2 vote, with only Supervisors John F. Herrity and Audrey Moore dissenting.
- October 23, 2000 – Judge Jane Marum Roush sentences 21-year-old Paul R. Pisacane to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of Henry A. Garvey on January 23 and John W. Bannister on March 19.
- October 23, 2009 – Ronald L. Robertson shoots Karen S. Deck in the head while attempting to unload a 9 mm pistol she had discovered in his closet. Robertson calls his mother and his friends, telling them he has accidentally shot his girlfriend, but is disbelieved. He does not call the police or the rescue squad. He calls his mother again the next day, and she notifies police, who discover Deck's corpse in Robertson's apartment.
