- January 23, 1950 – 75-year-old Dr. James Middleton commits suicide by asphyxiating himself in his automobile in the parking lot of the Fairview Elementary School in Fairfax Station.
- January 23, 1989 – An 8-year-old boy deliberately shoots his 6-year-old sister in the head with a .32 caliber revolver, mortally wounding her, in the bedroom of their grandmother's townhouse in Franconia.
- January 23, 1998 – Mir Aimal Kasi is sentenced to death by Judge J. Howe Brown for the January 25, 1993 murders of Frank Darling and Dr. Lansing Bennett outside the Central Intelligence Agency's Langley headquarters.
- January 23, 2000 – 65-year-old Henry A. Garvey is beaten and strangled to death at the Edmonds Garden Center at 8351-A Richmond Highway in the Mount Vernon area of Alexandria by Paul R. Pisacane.
- January 23, 2009 – Marysusan Giguere is found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for shooting her 60-year-old husband Ronald K. Giguere in the forehead with a .38 caliber revolver as he cowered in the corner of the upstairs bathroom of the couple's home at 1438 Crowell Road in Vienna on March 3, 2008.
- January 23, 2013 – An early morning fire caused by a wall mounted natural gas heater kills 48-year-old Laura J. Snyder-Gardner and her 16-year-old daughter Mary Ann at their home at 3103 Manor Road in Falls Church.
